A passion for paper and tradition

Since childhood I have felt a fascination with origami and with Japanese papers. Working with these papers--the products of a 1500-year tradition--and learning the art of origami were for me the path to my 生き甲斐, my ikigai, or reason for being. To set out with a single piece of paper, and--by folding and unfolding, by opening and closing, by sliding, turning, and creasing--to transform that paper into a bird, a heart, a flower: the experience is magical.  One can create any form desired, can convey any meaning; by these metamorphoses I am charged with new energy, new life.

One thousand cranes…

One thousand origami cranes (千羽鶴, senbazuru; literally “1000 cranes”) is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes (折鶴, orizuru) held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods.

"I strive to make my works distinctive by uniting this passion for form with techniques and materials from sources spanning a wide range of media. Each piece draws its inspiration from my life experience as a Brazilian by birth, a Japanese by descent, a Belgian by residence. These influences are further channeled by my surroundings and by the people I come to know during my sojourn. Taken together, all these make up the nature of my art and underlie the joy that I derive from it.”
